Third United Nations High-level Meeting on NCDs

In September, the United Nations General Assembly staged the third High-level Meeting (HLM3) on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which undertook a comprehensive review of the global and national progress achieved in putting measures in place that protect people from dying too young from heart and lung diseases, cancers and diabetes. Twenty-three Heads of Government and State and 55 Ministers of Health attended and spoke about their concern on NCDs.
The high-level meeting consisted of an opening segment, a plenary segment, two consecutive multi-stakeholder panels and a closing segment. More information on the programme can be found in UNGA Resolution A/RES/72/274, on the UN General Assembly website, and on WHO website.
The HLM3 2018 Political Declaration was adopted in the opening segment. It features 13 new commitments and transforms the 4 x 4 into 5 x 5 agenda, including air pollution as a risk factor and mental health as a disease. The Declaration is available in the six official UN languages. Statements made during the opening and closing segment of HLM3, as well as the plenary, are now posted.
