UNSCN Nutrition

UNSCN Nutrition is a periodic review of developments in international nutrition compiled by UNSCN from a variety of sources of information. UNSCN Nutrition aims to serve as a communication channel for the international nutrition community of practice, highlighting recent developments in policy and programme. The UNSCN Nutrition has published peer reviewed papers on relevant nutritional issues including updates on UNSCN members’ activities twice a year since 1988. Many developing country researchers and programme managers have found the UNSCN Nutrition very useful, as they often do not have easy access to other journals. The focus on policy and programme implications makes the UNSCN Nutrition unique compared to other research oriented nutrition publications.

UNSCN News 42: A Spotlight on the Nutrition Decade

The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition provides a window of opportunity to enhance coordination and cooperation amongst all actors, and drive integrated action across multiple sectors, to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

This issue of UNSCN News, published at the beginning of the Nutrition Decade, serves as a platform for various stakeholders to share concrete examples on how to eliminate all forms of malnutrition.

The issue is a collection of papers that examine:

  • Building blocks required to create sustainable, resilient food systems for healthy diets
  • Systemic drivers of diets, such as changes in food environments and food systems
  • Growing momentum for the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights
  • Policy incentives and policy coherence needed for diversification in the food systems
  • Actions within a food system framework to create healthier diets from more sustainable food systems
  • Alternative solutions to help temporarily fill the gap between nutrient requirements and nutrient supply, such as supplementation and fortification
  • Scaling Up Nutrition interventions and methodology for monitoring progress
  • Growing momentum to maximize programmatic linkages between nutrition and social protection
  • Better functioning food and agriculture markets to ensure that governments can achieve nutrition targets
  • Food-based dietary guidelines as a communication tool by health and education professionals
  • Positive impact that community-based actions can have on nutrition, rural economies, educational attainment and peace-building

Setting out the Nutrition Decade is an inclusive, continuous and collaborative process, building upon and connecting the independent initiatives of governments and their many partners. As we move further into the decade, UNSCN looks to the examples given in these papers to inspire nutrition actors to action, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the various national and regional strategic frameworks.
